Is Your Xbox 360 Broken? Then Welcome!
The Xbox 360 is one of the most powerful high definition gaming consoles currently on the market. Unfortunately due do it's high technical specification certain faults begin to creep in, one of these is the infamous ring of death. This is where all the lights around the power button flash red, this fault however is easily fixable. Is your Xbox 360 broken well you can fix it in half an hour.
The ring of death is usually attributed to an overheating fault, I say usually as sometimes it can be down to hardware faults. Before we carry out this repair I think it would be a good idea to make sure that we are fixing the correct problem. Luckily for us the Xbox will tell us what the problem is with it.
This repair should only be performed if your Xbox is outside of its manufacturing warranty. If it is not this will invalidate your warranty.
To remove the outer case of the Xbox use a small flat head screwdriver to press on the numerous clips around the Xbox, if you have pressed the clip correctly it will make a clicking sound, once all clips have been pressed the case will lift off.
The next step is to remove all the screws from the case this will require a T9 torque drive, star shaped screwdriver. Once these screws have been removed one half of the metal case can be removed to reveal the motherboard. To remove the motherboard from the rest of the case we will need to disconnect the cables to the DVD drive which will then lift out and also disconnect the power cable to the fans located to the left of the fans.
Once you have removed the motherboard flip it over to reveal two x-clamps, you will need to remove these which can easily be done using a flat head screwdriver. Once removed the heatsinks will lift off the board revealing the processor chips. The first step is to clean the surface of these chips using some glue remover. We then need to apply some thermal compound to the processors ensure that all three are completely covered and that the covering a even.
To solve the problem the heat sinks should be firmly attached to the board you should do this using screws instead of the clamps.
